Last week the Commission proposed to the European Parliament and Council to sign a Declaration of rights and principles that will guide digital transformation in the EU.

Forward looking professionals and consultancies operating in the fields of product safety, education, training, consultants in impact assessment (e.g.EIA, SIA) and corporate policies such as Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) can clearly see how many new opportunities the development of an equitable, right, clean — sustainable — digital industry will generate.

The “declaration” is a very concise document, with summaries and explanatory pictures for 6 key areas. I will not waste your time cutting and pasting data you can better access through the link above. The “declaration” proposed will put attention on access, education, as well as digital legacy rights. It ends directing attention to the social and ecological impact of digital services and products. An assessment and an assisting procedure will likely be required.

Today big tech companies deliver products to the market they feel are “good enough” and confront stakeholders’ rage afterward. The digital industry designs services today without known borders, even causing more social and environmental impacts than are needed or wanted. The digital industry needs, indeed, sustainable services and products, for better profits, long term stability and a positive impact.

This proposed “declaration” is a first key foundational stone for the change needed. Do not miss it.

For my Italian friends: do not miss the Conference at the Politecnico di Torino at 5.30 pm on February 10th — https://www.diati.polito.it/news/(idnews)/18013. Drawing from my 30 years’ experience in supporting the growth of the environmental consultancy industry for mining and oil companies, I will try to connect many dots in the digital services market sky to show how many opportunities will come for professionals in the years to come.
